I am a photographer based in Retford, Nottinghamshire, having recently relocated from Littlehampton. I offer wedding and portrait photography services, and landscape photography prints for sale.

My relationship with photography dates back more than forty years, starting with an old SLR camera handed down from my dad. Unlike many photographers, I feel little nostalgia for those pre-digital days. Those of you young enough to have only known digital photography will not know the “pleasure” of having to travel to town to take your film to be developed into prints. Nor the suspense of waiting for the express one-hour service, or the expense! 

Despite the frustrations of film, it was not until 2016 that I invested in my first digital SLR camera, a Nikon 3300. I soon upgraded to a Nikon D7500, and now use a Sony A7r3.

It always seemed obvious to combine photography with my interest in the natural landscape around me. Over the years, I have enjoyed other hobbies such as angling, birdwatching, and walking on the South Downs. The obvious connection between all these hobbies is a love of the great outdoors in general, and the Sussex countryside in particular. Striving to capture the beauty of this landscape is a wonderfully fulfilling challenge.

My landscape portfolio reflects the variety of the landscapes around me. Having lived until recently in an area sandwiched between the Sussex coast and the South Downs National Park, it is no surprise that my landscape photography time is split between visits to the beach and to the gently dramatic scenery of Rudyard Kipling’s “whale-backed Downs”. Simply being out in the landscape, experiencing that beauty and enjoying the moment, is reward in itself. Success is never guaranteed, but the joy of the environment is one of life’s certainties. 

Following my recent relocation, I am looking forward to exploring the glorious landscapes of my new home “patch”.

Equipment

As mentioned above, I now use a Sony A7R3, which I think is the perfect landscape, wedding and portrait photography tool. People are often interested in gear, and some of us obsess over it. But in reality, great photography does not need the best gear. Whilst a high spec modern camera does make certain tasks easier, there is an art to composition and to seeing good images that no camera can do for us. It takes a few weeks at most to learn how to use a new camera – striving to master the artistic and creative elements of photography is a journey that never ends. And I am grateful for that!
